Hello educator,

row 2011 new 278

With almost one quarter of the world’s wetlands, about two million lakes and 243,793 kilometres of coastline, Canada is truly a watery wonderland. And, as keepers of one-fifth of the world’s fresh water, taking care of this precious resource is a shared responsibility.

Rivers to Oceans Week, beginning World Oceans Day June 8 and encompassing Canadian Rivers Day June 12, is your opportunity to celebrate the water that makes Canada special and help your community recognize that ocean health is a freshwater issue.

To mark Rivers to Oceans Week in 2011, CWF is launching the Water’s Worth It! video contest. Have your class or community group send us a one-minute video telling us what’s so special about your local body of water and why it’s worth conserving. If you win, CWF will contribute $2,000 in funding towards a water-conservation project in your area. We are accepting entries from May 1 until June 1, 2011, with online voting at RiverstoOceans.ca during Rivers to Oceans Week (June 8 to 14) to choose the winner.

Rivers to Oceans Week 2011 will also see the release of a new Hinterland Who’s Who public service announcement featuring the killer whale. Found in all three of Canada’s oceans, the killer whale is one of the most distinctive marine mammals in the world. Learn more about this species at RiverstoOceans.ca or Hinterland Who’s Who, and visit these websites on World Oceans Day (June 8) to watch the new video.

Hinterland Who’s Who will also be releasing the Ocean Commotion webisode during Rivers to Oceans Week. Geared towards students, this video explains the impacts of ocean pollution on wildlife — and what to do about it — in a fun and educational way. Visit the WhoTube section of the Hinterland Who’s Who website on World Oceans Day (June 8) to watch this webisode. It will also be available on DVD, along with the most recent HWW videos and webisodes. You can order this free resource by sending your address to info@hww.ca, but order yours quickly as only 400 copies are available!

Visit RiverstoOceans.ca for a variety of water-related teaching resources including lesson plans, water ecology videos and learning posters like our Canadian watersheds map. Finally, does your class or community group have a Rivers to Oceans Week event you want to promote? List it on our Rivers to Oceans Week Event Map. Check back often to find out about water-related events and activities happening across the country.

Together, we can make water conservation mainstream.

Sincerely,

luba
