On behalf of everyone at the Canadian Wildlife Federation it is my pleasure to wish you all the best in the New Year. We thank you for your enthusiasm and commitment to wildlife education and look forward to working with you in 2012. This year is really special to the Canadian Wildlife Federation. It’s our 50th anniversary! And we want to celebrate with you throughout the year.

CWF Launches Habitat 2020 with a $5,000 Project Opportunity


CWF is offering a one-time award of $5,000 to support an outstanding Habitat 2020 project. If your students are interested in this 50th anniversary opportunity, please submit your application by Feb. 29. The selected project will be announced and posted online by Mar. 15. The project must be completed by June 30, 2012.

Habitat 2020 is education program to engage youth in hands on learning about wildlife and conservation. Students can create any wildlife-related project, including habitat improvement initiatives or creative approaches incorporating subjects such as fine arts, woodworking, music, dance, theatre, physical education, new technologies etc. Habitat 2020 applies to all grades, all subjects and all ages. If you are not submitting for the $5,000 award, your students can still register their project and apply to CWF for up to $500 in support for a class or $1,000 for a school. The deadlines are Jan. 30, Mar. 15 and Oct. 15.

Raise Money For Your School Projects


Does your school need to raise additional revenue for a field trip or project?  Why not try the CWF “Wild for My School” fundraising program. Our new products, including the Hand Powered Flashlight and CWF LED Cap, are perfect for your next class or school fundraiser and your students will make a profit from every item they sell.  Habitat 2020 classes which use CWF’s Wild For My School program may also be eligible for additional financial support.

Make your own Hinterland Who’s Who Video

Are you looking for a great project idea for your group that would touch upon the subjects of biology, technology and language? Make a homegrown Hinterland Who’s Who video. Find out how to make professional-looking public service announcements on a Canadian species, complete with HWW’s signature music. To inspire you, have a look at our videos or our fact sheets. You can also watch homegrown videos made by members of our public. And don’t forget to send us the finished piece so we can put it up on our website!

Join us for the Summer Institute


CWF is hosting a summer course in Nunavut July 21-28. Please sign up if you would like to receive more information on this program for educators. The non-credit course fee will be $1,500, which includes shared dormitory style accommodation as well as selected meals.

Learn about Healthy Wildlife


CWF is a sponsoring a new educational initiative to promote healthy wildlife. Our friends at the Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre have success stories, news and videos to share with Canadians through their new website. Check it out: www.healthywildlife.ca

Thank you for your dedication to conservation education. I encourage you to keep up to date on our activities through our online calendar. We have a busy year ahead, including participation in many educational events such as the Nunavut Teachers Conference and the National Congress on Rural Education in Saskatchewan.
